WHAT WILL I WRITE ON THE LAST PAGE
blank paper stares at me...

SO FAR AS I CAN

the trees at night stretch out
amid voices croakish old
in a dark shared with white eyes overhead

between banks of sunset sunrise
a river of shadow cuts its way
wherever it can press its claims

to be trusted with the gold rise
of the moon and being empty
I am carried away easily
on a bed of reflections
from kitchen lights of houses
backed to the river

so far to go
I share the gold so far as I can
for I have the hands and mind for it

wind is up cooler now
the eyes fly on some are gone
only the easy dark
holds me up
and I could almost say I've arrived
