SUMMER ENDING SOUNDS

cicada on a willow branch
this hot time is his time
from every tree a song like his buzzes
it makes us so happy

we are lazy and wait
we will outlive the cicadas' summer
they will outlive our civilization
each has his natural luck

this one sings as a jewel would sing
if it rose from folds of stone
to fly news of earth's long life
as far up as the branches

our thin complaints paused by song
rise again when it's over
as vapors rise to join in clouds
and make the eventual rain
