ER

by which I mean Eric Rensberger
is uncomfortably in this coffin which I made for him
the air around it feels it is already in another world
where it will never grow stale
and looks back with pity to this one
of gusts and stinks and rooms locked for decades

no light falls there for light has been made
invisible as has dark so ER can wake if he wants
and wave what he has stolen in the fresh air
but can never see it or not see it
or offer it for pennies of what it cost him at a yard sale
or let go of it for if it fell it would be falling
and rising as if gravity had lost its direction too
