Listen!

10/1/04

a silence has come into the cornfields
with their brown
behind them a ridge covered with trees
barely hangs onto its green
a flock swings through the air
its shape changes from moment to moment
your body is changing too

at night now the white of the moon
throws its dust around
the coolness that hangs between
the hot stars and us
is close at hand

the arrangements the world has made
suit us
if we will only let them
you were meant to live here
the heart says
and what that means
and whether it is right or wrong
is a great puzzle
not worth going into

the heart speaking
the coolness the flock's body
the green the brown
silence
all close
to each other and to you
