LOOKING BACK

we die of everything
and thousands of words
rush past ahead of us
lighter and freer
now that we can't
hold on to them

looking back
it's satisfying to realize
we've become the future
toward which all come tumbling

who slog and fall
and rise to fall
forward again

so much we wordless remember--
ah fever!

how it burned us up
as loved ones wept
all around the bed
and joints agonized
as if they were trying
to pull apart
fever! it was life itself

going faster and pulling along
even those deep cells
we thought we'd hidden
from work concerns have to etc.
leaving us at last
too involved even for speech
