7/4/05

the sun behind my back lights
amongst the trees to the west of the house
wild cherry dogwood broad dark leaves
of the redbud and behind them
having climbed maybe fifteen
twenty feet the wild rose held
in the feathery ferny arms of the sumac
reveals her pink flowers wherever
there is opening enough to shine

if what they say is true
the night will be as beautiful with storms
as this morning is with clean light and breeze
out of the nearby lull comes
the big western weather
is the nation composed of handshakes and kisses
region to region or marches and burning

fire in the sky is beautiful
the sun warms the bright distant stars
order our spirits and cheer them
and lightning though it burns and shatters
is so much like what is in the bones of spirit
that when it stands up we can make out
a vast Person beckoning
and we want to send up our own fire and
noise crazy with celebration
