SUMMER IS ENDING

the evenings draw off together
into a shared coolness
we go indoors at their suggestion
the neighbors all agree
mosquitoes bite weakly now
when potatoes boil in the kitchen
long-dead family lean out of
their photos and sniff hopefully

stars move closer to us
through the thinning air
there is a sense of kindly sinking
to the hours passing
I never thought as simply
or had such appetite for drowsing
all I've learned this summer
boils down to two words: even more
