ACCOUNT OF MY DAYS
Sequence: 3
STONECRUSHER
I went back to the roads I grew up on and walked daily
there was one I used to take to my grandparents' farmstead
it was made of concrete by the men of the neighborhood
in the thirties to give them work to earn a bit of cash
they told me a stonecrusher had been brought in for the job
I could imagine its massive metal parts and power
and see the scoop taken from one side of a little rise
just off the road where rocks were found to feed its appetite
I knew by the trees that filled the dig how much time had passed
it was snowy back there half a year ago when I made
my return and now here today it will get to ninety
the sun coming through the wet air presses a weight on me
and I am writing down my recall of the trip I made
to record how I remembered my grandparents' stories
