WHAT WILL I WRITE ON THE LAST PAGE
blank paper stares at me...

SO FAR AS I CAN AGAIN

the trees at night stretch out
amid voices croakish old
in a dark shared with white eyes overhead

between banks of sunset sunrise
a river of shadow cuts its way
wherever it can press its claims

to be trusted with the gold rise
of the moon and me as I am
empty I am light enough

to be carried away easily on it
at rest on a bed of reflections
from houses backed to the river

I eric rensberger poet
of these words run them again on
my tongue smooth as night runs

between day and day
these reflections of my days grow longer
and still I have

so far to go again
I share these reflections so far as I can
for I have the hands and mind for it

wind is up cooler now the eyes fly on
some have gone the easy dark holds me up
and I could almost say I've arrived
