SURVIVAL

Survive the summer, crumbs of dead leaves dropped by the
drought, the track baked hard underfoot, water lost to some
towns but so deep in others they are the ones lost. Survive
until the first cool nights, lie there with the window open,
the musical world of beast and bug outside. A letter you wish
you still had runs through your mind. You could almost
recite it, but if memory were perfect you wouldn't be wishing
for it. Believe it has survived in an attic or a garage
somewhere you once lived. Very dry now and stained with age,
but the words on it still legible. Keep your mind on that
and forget about remembering or finding, it's pointless.
Sooner or later the box it's in will arouse someone's curiosity.
