WHOLE LIFE day of cold rain then late afternoon a heavy fog packs the air next day strong sun shows how the rain whittled the brown leaves from the trees so that even the center of the woods is bright everything is now visible all contours and structures revealed your whole life you've worked on this on that the other too and still the this the that and other are where they were before you tried these are the months of long shadows the weeks go by like faded regrets and the days the hours the minutes clear out one by one no more looking back for if the long shadows can be seen ahead anyway then what is behind you is now in front of you
