branch to branch
the squirrels are passed

many passings over bare cedar limbs
strip the dull outer bark
to the color of old bone

white highways
across the forest

through the stillness
you sense a turning
in a year that moves itself

hard buds on the earliest 
flowering shrubs
a motion at the ends of roots
outward and inward

motion unseen unheard
only imagined
or inferred from memory
