OLD DUST ON OLD BOOKS

there really was only ever the one way home
and I never took it
but the dust of it has settled along
the tops and spines
of these books I never returned

now there is nowhere to give them back to
and if I returned I would return
from somewhere outside
outside is where I am from now

the children of that place and time
were given these stories to encourage moral behavior:
"he kissed the pigeon and let it go"

but that was before I was born
not that being born has anything to do with it
