WHAT DO I KNOW?

years past and far away behind me
I can never turn fast enough
to see what's in them

what I dreamed and what I wished
and what I remember
crowd together in a swirling blur

the clouds overhead tremble
as they shed rain
a vague note drops from a damp bird

and it could be any of the days
that is like today
or one that I imagined

I talk it over with myself like this
or imagine talking like this with myself
imagine hearing what I imagine saying

imagine one self to say one to hear
what is memory what dream what wish
this gets said that gets said but even

if you had only hallucinated it all
it would still be as it is
and as beautiful
