FIRST DAY OF SPRING A BLIZZARD VISITS US

this last snow's weight and power
the piles of it rounding off the flat surfaces the mass
of it bending treetops over till their tips are caught
    in the drifts
all the early shoots of daffodil and flowers of crocus
hidden under the new shapes discovered in the white folds

our power gone for the lines that carry it
receive their damage too the destruction levied
on all things that have been raised above the earth
the immense silence demanded by so much from the sky
broken as another limb (listen) gets torn from its trunk

for the birds' hunger for their use their mere survival
scatter under the sheltered overhang of the porch
dry seed in quantity on the rare in this white bare
    ground
where their delicate feet will mark on each other's marks
till there is a printed language of their searching and
    finding
