TRUE

time to notice
true April withheld in the persistent stretches
of my inner continent
time to be

up again ready to break
the steady trickle of chill days
into each separate knot
do I want anything longer than
do I oppose as a rebel

do I grasp the essential
wavering search with my hands
for what ends the seeking

certainly I've heard of
continuing attacks a last column
coming up with relief
a rapt attention to immortality
strength joined to strength

till my own babbling
sounds true like a foreign language
fond of austere gods lofty tombs where
the people gather for a common meal

assured of life praising
its second by second re-creation
the sharpness with which it parts
bare ground for new shoots to rise
with their own praises carried centrally
open for all the world to see
