STORY ABOUT SAFETY

the wind up
the growth of corn and hay
at its height
the redwing blackbird's song
the swallow's master flight

the strong houses and
stronger barns
children with thick legs
the stranger rode his horse
amongst us

he looked at barns
fields children
and thought to overwhelm us
he did not understand
he did not ride as we did

we betrayed him
they carried him away
our children could come out again
he was in some awful place
we prayed he would be saved
