WINTER GENESIS I

mornings on this stone seat
watching light come on
over my neighbor's golden fields and into
my field of trees
stark light durable trees

or at night with the full moon
there in the top branches
and my young dog underneath
snuffling through the layered leaves'
old dark tracing scent

how many I think are watching
with me now? moon's luminous
pan sun's advance golden fields
or not trees or dog or not how many
sit with me? and where? and watch light rise
