APOLOGIZE BUT

I should apologize to the county
for the phlox I dug from its ditches
and moved to the bank of my creek
but it is their creek too and the phlox
will spread and will be in years to come
cooling to the eye in our hot days
when neighbors and strangers drive by
over the culvert through which our creek
too small to be named pours its
occasional flood or dribbles or dries to echoes
