NIGHTWORK

the secret government
of the United States
meeting in a doughnut shop
at 2:00 a.m. disguises

killers as countergirls and
busboys to guard
the door and see
that they are alone

which done they begin
singing and passing money
around the room
the more they sing

the faster the money
is handed around
the quicker the money goes
the louder the song

soon they are dancing
and flinging bundles
of bills at each other
the blinds are closed

they sweat their arms
ache their throats are
sore but the song
and dance go on

till just before the
first customers are
expected stopping
on their way to

their shitty early
morning jobs no one
could like or really
want to keep

the blinds open
dark figures shuffle away
the killers are replaced
by the real help

and one sleepy guy
coming in stumbles--
what luck!--on
a pile of money
