JUST AFTER DAWN We sat among the cattle and he asked me to take a fresh water jug to his brother who waited by the spring. The spout of the old jug had been chosen by a snake for a nest, and for his brother to drink, he must have the new one. Though the bulls were threatening and the gate wouldn't latch, I must think of the man by the spring and carry his help to him. In this way I could earn both men's acceptance, their friendship, even their loyalty.
