there were some the wind dried some that sheltered in the curve a tree root made hanging onto a creek bank some lasted until it warmed up again some dropped dead one minute into the new year a path in the brush a wide concrete highway ocean streams and channels of air cut through air carried some to their night rest or day rest some never moved at all unless something else moved them some were walking some swam some flashed through the air some were tired they lay on their backs if they had backs some had no eyes to close some lamed themselves leaping on the rocks there where the ground suddenly sinks into a cup or funnel some held out all through the storm and bitter cold a weather so hard it could break bones if you had them
