SIGHT

between one minute before
midnight and one minute after
the real night opens up

stars examine us
through long range instruments
they have built into constellations

none so expert as they are
in all that is human

the individual burning
the strange patterns we make
over long reaches of time

you can feel on the back of your neck
at midnight the warmth
of the stares

but pretend you don't notice
and have no interest
in this hour with its vastiness
pretend you're nearly asleep already

and the dawn is all you care for
or if not the dawn
that minute
between night and glimmer
that comes before
