Listen!

ALAN AFTER HE LEFT

missed out on certain sundays
fruit trees blooming like bows tied around the town
news of a crash
chances to feel outrage or sympathy
sunrises with the smoke from houses
indistinguishable from the fog
orchestras and travel and help
a lot of nutty entanglements
grandeur of the hawk lightness of the sparrow
the heart bent by circumstance
trying to straighten itself on its friends
dogs barking horses running

every day he was missed he missed
the center of attention moved elsewhere
or he took it with him like a hat
so huge no one else would wear it
underneath which a song rises in a boy's clear voice
(sunrise after the last hours of night
alone in the barn with the brain tumbling about
memory of the boy's clear voice mixed with the slow light
coming excitement rising with the light the spirit
reckless compassionate attentive
to all listening until the moment comes to speak)
